Powerboat event halted by weather

Powerboat waiting to race
Powerboats have been forced to stay on the quay due to the weather

Bad weather has forced the first day's racing in the World Offshore Two Litre Powerboat Championships in Guernsey to be cancelled.

It was hoped that a shorter course could be used for Thursday's event but rough seas forced it to be abandoned.

"I'm fairly disappointed but you've got to think of safety, so the right decision has been made," organiser Kevin Walsh told BBC Guernsey.

It is hoped that races scheduled for the weekend will go ahead.

Walsh added: "It's not only the safety of the boats driving but also recovery if a boat turns over or something."

Meanwhile driver Peter Bonam-Christie said: "The race committee have made a good choice.

"What's nice is they've made a choice and a decision, on lots of other regattas you spend the whole day saying 'are we going, are we not'."
