Weale won 17 and lost 18 of his fencing contests |
Sam Weale led the British challenge at the second modern pentathlon World Cup event of the year in Cairo. Bath-based Weale, 26, the only British male from a team of four to make the final, finished 18th. "Everything was quite solid, but at a World Cup that brings you into midfield, not the top 12," said national coach Philipp Waeffler. Olympic silver medallist Heather Fell was the leading Briton in the women's event, coming home 19th overall. Team-mate Louise Helyer had been 10th going into the final combined run/shoot event, a new discipline at World Cup events, but slipped down the field to finish 23rd. Lydia Rosling, 19, secured her best World Cup result with a 25th-placed finish, with Charlotte Grandfield, 20, in 28th. "They are both young athletes and they got some decent experience," said Waeffler. Lithuania's Laura Asadauskaite won the women's event, with Czech Republic athlete Ondrej Polivka taking top honours in the men's event.
