Ruairi Convery starred for Derry after missing last weekend's defeat by Down |
Down and Derry both earned wins in the Christy Ring Cup on Saturday. The Mourne County made it two wins from as many games as two goals from Gareth Johnson helped edge out Kerry 3-11 to 2-10 at Tralee. Johnson's second goal came late in the game to put Down ahead again while James Coyle struck Down's other goal. Ruairi Convery hit 1-5, Aaron Kelly notched 1-2 while Sam Dodds struck 0-3 before suffering a broken toe as Derry defeated Wicklow 2-15 to 0-9. Joe Murphy was booked after the incident which led to Dodds' injury and later received a straight red card for a dangerous pull on Mark Craig at Swatragh. Down's victory guarantees them a semi-final spot in the competition. Down defeated Kerry by nine points in the NHL recently but was a lot closer at Austin Stacks Park on Saturday. Derry led 1-7 to 0-6 at half-time but took complete control in the second half to run out comfortable winners.
