Kieran Courtney scored two goals as Down claimed an impressive Allianz NHL Division Two victory at Cusack Park. Courtney hit the net after just 30 seconds and Paul Braniff added a second goal on 15 minutes. Goals from Luke Folan and Killian Cosgrove put Westmeath in front but Courtney netted after 33 minutes to give Down a 3-8 to 2-7 half-time lead. Stephen Clarke's goal increased the gap while Robbie Jackson and Andrew Mitchell netted late on for Westmeath. The Mournemen were well clear before the Jackson and Mitchell scored their goals in the last four minutes. It is Down's first win of the league campaign after they lost to Ulster rivals Antrim in their opener.
