Jim McKernan's side lost by two points |
Down went down 1-13 to 0-10 to Laois in Sunday's NHL Division Two match. The Mournemen matched the hosts well at Portlaoise until John Walsh's 55th minute goal paved the way for victory. Down led 0-3 to 0-1 by the sixth minute but Laois bounced back to lead 0-5 to 0-3 and then 0-8 to 0-5 at half-time. Just two points separated the sides as they entered the final quarter but once Walsh found the net Laois sealed victory with Zane Keenan's fourth point of the game. Down raced into an early lead with points from Andy Savage, Ciaran Coulter and freetaker Simon Wilson. Laois led by two points by the 22nd minute and although freetaker James Young was dismissed through a 33rd minute yellow card, the hosts finished the opening half strongly to take a three-point lead at the interval. Down began well on the restart thanks to an Eoin Clarke point, and they pulled to within two points. Laois finished the game in strong fashion to secure the points. Wilson top-scored for Down with three points, all from frees, while Keenan was top point-scorer for the home side.
