Omagh, helped by four Gareth McDermott points, led 0-5 to 0-3 at the interval. A further point then edged Omagh three ahead however Maghera then hit five unanswered points to move 0-8 to 0-6 ahead. They maintained their two-point lead to the finish to earn a semi-final tussle with Patrician High School Carrickmacross.
Mark Lynch's move to full-forward in the second half helped turn the match in Maghera's favour. Lynch scored two crucial second half points while Charlie Kielt, Jonathan Nelson and Michael McCann were also on target. Maghera boss Dermot McNicholl agreed that the Lynch's switch had played a crucial part in his team's victory. "Mark is a great player who can play in any of the central positions," said McNicholl. "We didn't play so well in the first half but our performance in the second half was tremendous". Maghera dominated the competition in the 1980s and early 1990s but they have failed to win the title since 1996. Omagh's last outright victory in the competition was in 1974 although they did share the title in 2001. |
