| Wednesday, 28 August, 2002, 07:51 GMT 08:51 UK Harkin awaits Croker reply ![]() Brendan Devenney is supporting his county chairman Donegal GAA chairman Danny Harkin has claimed that he is in the dark over suggestions that his position is under threat because of his recent comments on `pay for play'. Harkin caused consternation among conservative GAA circles when he suggested in a recent interview that players were "selling themselves short" in looking for a flat expenses rate of 127 euro a week. The Gaelic Players Association, which is not recognised by the GAA, is demanding the figure for intercounty players but Harkin said that players deserved up to 400 euro a week. Following Harkin's comments, his Donegal county executive colleagues issued a statement disassociating themselves from the remarks which led to speculation that the chairman's position was under threat. Harkin then wrote to Croke Park requesting clarification on whether he was set to be punished because of his remarks.
However, Harkin has yet to receive a reply to his letter. The Donegal chairman insists that he hasn't broken any GAA rules. "I fully support the amateur status enshrined in rule 12 of the official guide," said Harkin. However, Harkin added that the attitudes of many GAA officials on the issue of compensation for player were outdated. "I served on the Central Council for a number of years - many years ago Players' support "Times have changed a lot in the interim - but some of the attitudes towards compensation for players are unfortunately still prevalent. "It's time we had some new blood and fresh thinking. "Players will have to be looked after realistically - sooner rather than later". Following the Donegal county executive's criticism of Harkin, Donegal players issued a statement commending the chairman on his stance. |
