But the new National League champions had to play second fiddle in the end to Joe Kernan's side who many believed had missed their chance following last week's draw.

But it was an encounter that saw both teams take turns to dominate for long periods, before Armagh stole away with Duffy's 65th minute strike.

Armagh had their heroes with Oisin McConville really finding his feet in the second period, while Steve McDonnell also performed with great credit.

Tyrone relied mainly on the accuracy of Stephen O'Neill who picked up seven points, with Cormac McAnallen, Kevin Hughes, and Sean Cavanagh all scoring two each.

But any time Tyrone got ahead, back came Armagh.

Paddy McKeever was their top scorer with five points, while McDonnell grabbed three and McConville two as their shots counted.

Armagh started off like wildcats, going three points ahead in as many minutes.

Then it was Tyrone to take command as they rushed to a 0-4 to 0-6 lead after 16 minutes.

Armagh then came back in the run-up to the break with that great McEntee strike to go in at the interval 1-8 to 0-6 ahead.

Tyrone came out for the second half the stronger and applied more pressure on the 2000 and 2001 champions.

They crept back into the game midway through the half to cut the leeway by a point.

But Tyrone could not bury Armagh, and that second goal finally sunk the champions.

Armagh now face Fermanagh in the next round while Tyrone will await their fate for the All-Ireland Qualifying competition.
