Stoke's Czech rider Hynek Stichauer suffered a broken arm in July |
Stoke Potters were emphatically beaten in the quarter-finals of the Young Shield as they suffered a crushing 64-26 second leg defeat at Workington. The thumping home win earned the Comets a 113-67 aggregate victory. The defeat brought the curtain down on a tough season in which the Potters finished 12th in the Premier League. "It has been a difficult season for us. We now have to turn our attentions to team building for next season," said Potters team manager Malcolm Vasey. Stoke travelled to Workington Sunday's second leg facing an uphill struggle, having lost the first leg at Loomer Road 49-41. But they never really got a foothold in the second leg, gaining only one heat advantage out of a possible 15. Vasey took some positives from the night's racing, including Czech rider Hynek Stichauer's return from a broken arm. "It was a lack lustre performance with the only real highlights being Ricky Wells and Lee Smart, who got better as the evening went on. "It was also good to have Hynek back in the team. He was a little rusty but I'm sure it won't be long before he was back to where he was before his injury."
