Birmingham ride in front of their own fans on Wednesday night |
Birmingham came up well short in their opening meeting of 2009, losing 57-39 at Rye House in the Premier Trophy. The Brummies' new line-up fell behind early, trailing 17-7 after four heats, not helped by debutant Richard Sweetman touching the tapes in heat one. Skipper Jason Lyons and Tomasz Piszcz closed the gap briefly but they lacked support from their team-mates. Piszcz top-scored for the Brummies with 17 points and Lyons added 14, Robert Mear led Rye House with 11 points. Birmingham's legion of debutants found it hard going throughout, a point borne out by Marek Mroz being the third highest scorer with an extremely modest four points. Robert Ksiezak, Ludvig Lindgren and Ben Taylor failed to earn a single race win between them, while Sweetman did not trouble the scorers at all. The Brummies will be hoping for some better form on Wednesday night when the squad take part in the Alan Hunt Memorial Trophy at Perry Barr, the individual meeting that serves as the traditional curtain-raiser to their home campaign.
