Brummies will be cautious - Drury

Birmingham Brummies promoter Graham Drury has insisted that he will not risk bankrupting the club to achieve success on the track.

Drury wants to improve on last year's run to the Premier Trophy final, while safeguarding their long-term future.

"First and foremost it's a business," Drury told BBC WM at the launch of the 2009 season at Perry Barr.

"I don't want to bring success on the track and in three years time the club goes bust."

The Brummies have retained only two members of the 2008 squad, captain Jason Lyons and Tomasz Piszcz.

Drury has been impressed with the attitude of his five new signings in contract negotiations with regard to the current economic climate.

"The riders that are in the team this year are riding here because they want to ride for Birmingham, not necessarily because we'll give them more money than anybody else," he said.

I would like to think we are contributing to the sporting success of Birmingham as a city

The Brummies are starting their third season since reforming and Drury is hoping the success of the team will lead to a similar level of recognition as the football teams in the area.

"I would like to think that now we are an integral part of the sporting world in Birmingham.

"When people talk about Aston Villa, Birmingham and West Brom I would like to think in our little way we are contributing to the sporting success of Birmingham as a city."

The Brummies begin the 2009 campaign with a trip to Rye House in the Premier Trophy on Sunday (15 March 15).

The first meeting at Perry Barr is the Alan Hunt Memorial Trophy on 18 March.
