Compton makes speedway comeback

Andre Compton
Compton returns to the Comets after five years with Sheffield

Workington Comets will hand retired rider Andre Compton a return after a serious injury to Adam Roynon ended his season weeks before the opening round.

Roynon suffered a broken neck and a blood clot on the brain in a crash at King's Lynn's Norfolk Arena on Friday.

Workington are also without Australian rider Tom Hedley who remains in his home country awaiting a work permit.

"We decided to use a three point rider [in Compton] to complete the team," said Comets owner Keith Denham.

Desbury-born Compton, 31, has ridden for Sheffield for the past five years and was also with them in 1998 and 1999.

In a career which started with Bradford Dukes in 1993, Compton has ridden for a string of clubs including Newcastle Diamonds, Berwick Bandits and Elite League giants Poole Pirates.
