Jos Verstappen says he will not be driving for Jordan this season after ending talks with the Formula One team. Earlier this week team boss Eddie Jordan said the Dutchman was poised to sign for the team.
But a statement released on behalf of the driver said that the "exhaustive" negotiations had "definitively" ended.
Verstappen's decision should boost the hopes of British drivers Ralph Firman and Allan McNish of landing the final available F1 seat for 2004.
The team unveiled their new car on Wednesday without announcing a team-mate for German Nick Heidfeld.
But Jordan said that Verstappen was still very much in the frame for the vacant seat and the car carried the logo of his sponsor Trust.
However, Verstappen has now announced that the talks have reached an end.
"After exhaustive negotiations concerning all contracts, Trust and the management of Jos have decided to stop negotiations with Jordan definitively," read the statement.
Verstappen would have brought about �5m in much-needed sponsorship to Jordan.
However, the saga could continue as Verstappen also pulled out of talks at the end of last month only to resume them soon afterwards.
