Hamelin (74) and Currie (31) try to avoid Richie Cunningham |
Two Jersey riders were involved in the crash on day one of the MRO Morello Powerbikes races at Snetterton. Rob Currie collided with a rider-less bike breaking a collar bone and a wrist on Saturday. Currie's bike then collided with Chris Hamelin's, knocking him off as well and leading to the race being stopped. The third islander taking part, Luke de la Cour, was the only Jersey rider to restart and finished fourth to win the Stock Cup. Initially, de la Cour qualified his Yamaha R1 on the front row of the grid in an excellent third place, with Currie and Hamelin side by side on row six in 23rd and 24th positions. | It's my first broken bone injury so I can't complain." |
After good starts in the first race, Currie, on his Grafters GSX-R was right behind Hamelin as they exited Russells Chicane for the first time. The rider ahead of Hamelin crashed with everyone behind trying to avoid him and his bike. Hamelin succeeded, but Currie found the machine sliding into his path and, with nowhere to go, he collided head-on. He told BBC Jersey: "The bike's alright but I'm not thinking of getting back on it until June or July. It's my first broken bone injury so I can't complain." In the first race the following day, de la Cour then crashed out at Russells Chicane on the first lap. Then in the second race, after impressively fighting his way up to second place, crashed again by highsiding spectacularly at Russells three laps from the finish. Chris Hamelin fared much better on his Honda Fireblade and improved on his starting position of 24th to finish an excellent 13th in race one and 19th in race two, which was sixth and ninth in the Clubman Cup class.
