TT Marshals express concerns over health agreement

Carden is expecting over 50% of marshals to come from off the island

Former chairman of the Isle of Man TT Marshals' Association Bill Carden has expressed his concerns over the ending of the reciprocal health agreement.

In 2010, visiting marshals will still be covered while on duty by a scheme organised by the Auto Cycle Union.

However travelling marshals will not be covered for any ongoing treatment if they are injured during the rest of their island visit.

The reciprocal health agreement is set to end on 1 April.

Carden told BBC Isle of Man: "The TT races and Manx Grand Prix rely heavily on volunteer marshals making the journey to the island. A journey which is already expensive."

Every session of the TT and Manx Grand Prix requires a minimum of 508 marshals because of the size (37.73 miles) and nature of the Mountain Course.

Carden continued: "In 2010 we expect over 50% of the marshals to be from the UK or further afield.

"I don't yet know exactly how much the travel insurance will cost but it all adds up and without these people there is no event."

The first practise session of the Isle of Man TT is scheduled for 29 May.
