Peter Karlsson scored 10 points in the first-leg win over Swindon |
Manager Peter Adams has said that Wolverhampton will not be defensive despite taking a big lead into the second leg of the Elite League final. Wolves have a 16-point advantage over Swindon Robins after a 54-38 first-leg win at Monmore Green on Monday. Adams told BBC WM: "We've got to be careful that we don't go there in defensive mode. "We're going to try to win there as well. The best form of defence is attack in any sport." Six different Wolves riders were heat winners at Monmore, but Adams believes that their margin of victory could have been greater. "Looking back it could and should have been a bigger advantage," added Adams. "We threw a few points away, but these things happen. We're well aware of what Swindon are capable of at Blunsdon, there's still a lot of work in this yet. "The strength-in-depth in the team has been tremendous all through the season. Every time our riders go to the tapes you never know who's going to win, but usually one of them does." Wolves' superb result was achieved despite falls for Tai Woffinden and Ty Proctor early in the meeting. "You mustn't let these things get you down," said Adams. "In a match like this you've got to regroup as individuals and as a unit. "I think it was Adam Skornicki's fault that Tai fell off in the third race, that was a 5-1 that turned into a 3-3. "These are the things that come back to bite you if you're not careful." Adams had positive words for his entire team, but none more so than captain Peter Karlsson, who scored 10 points only a fortnight after breaking his collarbone in a crash in the semi-final and joined Freddie Lindgren for a critical 5-1 in heat 13. "Peter Karlsson was absolutely tremendous, what a performance," said Adams. "That was a fantastic result in that race [heat 13]." Wolves warmed up for the second leg at Blunsdon on Monday, 12 October with an impressive performance in a Midland League meeting at Peterborough on Thursday. Wolves were leading 38-34 after 12 heats when the meeting was curtailed following an injury to the Peterborough rider Henning Bager. The track doctor was needed to accompany Bager to hospital, leaving insufficient medical cover at the track. Peter Karlsson scored eight points from three rides to continue his recovery. PETERBOROUGH: Niels-Kristian Iversen 8, Kenneth Bjerre 7, Ales Dryml 6+3, Mads Korneliussen 5, Jesper Kristiansen 4, Henning Bager 4, Kenneth Hansen R/R. WOLVERHAMPTON: Nicolai Klindt 8+1, Peter Karlsson 8, Fredrik Lindgren 7+1, Tai Woffinden 5, Adam Skornicki 4+1, Ty Proctor 3+2, Chris Kerr 3.
