A goal from Jermaine Easter saw MK Dons edge a tight match against Walsall.
The striker tapped in on-loan Blackburn winger Aaron Doran's low cross from two-yards out just after the half-hour.
Walsall's Darren Byfield came close early on but he blazed wide from the edge of the box and then saw a 22-yard strike saved by Willy Gueret.
Dons lost defenders Dean Lewington and David McCracken to injury but rallied after Easter's goal and held on despite two good late efforts from Byfield.
MK Dons assistant manager Karl Robinson told BBC Three Counties Radio:
"It just shows how far we have come when you can put a performance in which was not a bad performance, but we can still not be happy with it.
"At times we did really well and it was good that in our good spell we got the goal, which was important"
