West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson was kept from an England recall by an ankle ligament injury.
Carson, 23, has won three caps for England, the last of which came in the 2-1 friendly victory over Germany in November 2008.
"England asked about Scott's availability," Baggies manager Roberto Di Matteo told the club's website.
"But it was a non-starter as he suffered an ankle ligament sprain in training last week."
The former Liverpool man is now struggling to be fit for West Brom's clash with Reading at The Hawthorns on Saturday.
"We're wrapping him in cotton wool this week in the hope that he will be OK for Saturday," added Di Matteo.
Carson made his England debut in a friendly against Austria in November 2007.
His competitive debut came in the 3-2 defeat to Croatia at Wembley, a loss which saw England eliminated from Euro 2008.
