Camier eyes World Superbike ride

Leon Camier
This is only Camier's third season in the British Superbike Championship

Kent superbike rider Leon Camier says he wants to step up to World Championship level in 2010.

The Ashford rider, 22, who leads the British Superbike Championship, may not defend the title if he wins it.

"I would like to move up to the World Championship but we're weighing up the options," he told BBC Radio Kent.

"I'm just waiting to see what the Moto GP guys do, as that feeds down to us. In the next month or two, things will start to happen."

He would not be the first British rider to make the transition.

His former team-mate, Sheppey's Shane 'Shakey' Byrne won the 2008 British Championship and declined the opportunity to defend his crown - choosing instead to test himself on the world stage.

However Camier is concentrating for now on the remaining five rounds of the British competition, as he continues his charge for his first title.

But despite being 75.5 points ahead of his Airwaves Yamaha team-mate James Ellison, he refuses to admit that his name is as good as on the trophy.

"It's really easy to want to win every race but if I start pushing too hard and crash, I lose points or risk injury," he said.

"I've got a good points lead at the moment and I've got to be pretty sensible about it."

Camier has won 11 of the 14 races so far. Next up is his home race meeting at Brands Hatch on 7/8/9 August.

"It's the track I'd like to do the best at," he said. "You've got a lot of friends and family watching, and you put more pressure on yourself.
