Haslam wins as Byrne takes title

Leon Haslam
Haslam has won in each of the last four rounds in BSB

Leon Haslam took victory in race two of Sunday's 11th round of the British Superbike championships at Silverstone to consolidate second in the standings.

Haslam was 11th in race one after a collision with Tom Sykes, while Shane Byrne's third place behind his Ducati team-mate Leon Camier sealed the title.

The HM Plant Honda rider hit back to win race two ahead of Byrne and Sykes.

Haslam's team-mate Cal Crutchlow took second in race one for the Louth-based outfit but retired from race two.

Alford's Peter Hickman, deputising for Red Viper Honda in his first Superbike race in over a year, took 14th place in race one before finishing just outside the points in race two in 16th.

Byrne has an unassailable 100-point lead with just 50 points up for grabs at the final round on October 12 at the Brands Hatch Indy circuit.

Behind Byrne is a four-way battle for the runner-up spot.

Haslam has an 18-point advantage over Sykes, with Crutchlow a further 21 points behind in fourth, just six ahead of Camier.

In Supersport, Woodhall Spa's Steve Plater claimed his fourth podium finish of the season with third place on the AIM Yamaha.

Glen Richards wrapped up the title with a fourth-placed finish, but Rob Frost from Ruskington crashed out on the Team Buff Triumph.

Boston's Ben Wilson stood on the podium twice during the day, finishing second in the R1 cup and third in Superstock, one place ahead of Hickman with Lincoln racer Lee Jackson eighth.

With one round to go and Steve Brogan and Jon Kirkham having clinched first and second places in the championship, Hickman has a 12-point cushion in third.

"The bonus for me is that the other three riders who were chasing for third place in the championship either crashed or made a mistake and didn't score points at all," Hickman said.

The next five riders in the standings - including Wilson in seventh and Jackson eighth - are covered by just six points.
