"Shakey" Shane Byrne is bidding to win his second title |
Sheppey's Shane Byrne extended his lead at the top of the British Superbike Championship, despite only two third places at Oulton Park this weekend. It is the first time this season the Kent racer has failed to win at least one race, but he leads nearest rival Cal Crutchlow by nearly 100 points. "I've got a nice lead at the moment but there's still five rounds to go and 250 points up for grabs," said Byrne. "When there's not enough points for anyone to beat us the job's done." Byrne added: "But for now we'll keep plugging away and I'm off home now to begin a load of training to be even fitter and stronger for the next race." | OVERALL STANDINGS 1 S Byrne (Ducati) 312 points 2 C Crutchlow (Honda) 213 3 T Sykes (Suzuki) 176 4 L Haslam (Honda) 174 5 L Camier (Ducati) 160 6 J Ellison (Honda) 150 |
The Airwaves Ducati rider told BBC Radio Kent he does the majority of his fitness work on a push bike, combined with a bit of running. Byrne's team-mate Leon Camier, from Ashford, missed both races after a heavy fall in qualifying. But it was a good weekend for Maidstone's Scott Smart - who claimed his best finish of the season with an eighth in race two. The Kawasaki rider finished 11th in race one. Rizla Suzuki's Tom Sykes claimed a win double at the Cheshire circuit. The next round Knockhill on 10 August.
