| Faldo backs Tiger for record Woods has another record in his sights Nick Faldo is tipping Tiger Woods to complete the first ever clean sweep of the Majors by winning the US Masters at Augusta on Sunday. Faldo, the winner of three Masters, six majors and a holder of a record 11 Ryder Cup caps, says Woods is "playing golf I have never even dreamt of". And Faldo added: "There will always be some guy on his game to challenge him, but I don't think there's anybody who can stop him if he really wants it. "He has a gift to make things happen and the ability to do what he wants to do.
Woods is already the holder of the US Open, Open and US PGA, and the Masters gives him a chance of an unprecedented clean sweep. The closest Faldo ever got was 11 years ago. He successfully retained the Masters, something only Jack Nicklaus had done before, then just missed out on a play-off for the US Open. He recovered a month later to record a five-stroke victory in the Open at St Andrews, but the tournament victories have since dried up.
"I want to play well, and my game is showing good signs at times. But I'm just going to enjoy the week." Faldo has good memories at Augusta. But his play-off victories over Scott Hoch and Ray Floyd in 1989 and 1990 were not even as dramatic as his comeback win against Greg Norman in 1996. "That was a great moment in my career, and I'm glad it is now being recognised as a great day - one of the classic golfing days. "That 67 was as perfect golf as I have played. At first, though, it was remembered as the great Greg crash but as time has gone on it's now recalled as one of the great head-to-heads - and I'm pleased about that." |
