| Woods goes for Grand Slam glory Woods could shoot his way into the record books Since turning professional, every year has been special for Tiger Woods. This could be the best one yet. For if he manages to win the US Masters at Augusta, a feat he achieved in 1997, then he will become the first player ever to hold all four Major championships at the same time. As the man himself said, with typical understatement: "That opportunity doesn't really present itself very often." Woods, who won the US Open, the Open and USPGA tournaments last year, joined Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as the only players to have won each of the four Majors.
While his victory at The Open at St Andrews last year gave him all four titles - he won the US PGA in 1999 before defending it last year - he felt he had not yet achieved the Grand Slam. "Some people say you have to do them within a calendar year and other people say no. It all depends on what your outlook is," said Woods. Should he complete the feat, it will go a long way to cementing his place as the best golfer ever, an accolade many already feel is a toss-up between him and Jack Nicklaus. In many ways, the jury will remain out until Woods displays the longevity that characterised 'The Golden Bear'. After all, Nicklaus won 18 Majors in a 25 year-period between 1961 and 1986, and was competing hard in 1998 at the Masters aged 58, when he was still in the hunt on the back nine of the final round. But Woods has it within him to win more Majors than Nicklaus ever did. If he can keep his focus, and hunger to win despite all the riches he has already amassed, then the best-ever mantle will surely be his. For now, however, his sights are set no further than his seventh appearance at Augusta. He admits he is a different player from the one that triumphed by a record-breaking 12 strokes four years ago.
"Back in 1997 I was just getting started in my professional career. "I hadn't played a full year and I was just getting accustomed to playing the tour and hoping to get off to a good start. "I have a few years now to look back on it and it was a great way to start my professional career." One of his rivals, Phil Mickelson, who pushed him close at the Bay Hill Invitational in March, thinks Woods' chances of making history are strong. "Tiger has an opportunity to compete a Grand Slam. Nobody has ever held all four Majors at the same time and now the odds on him doing it are extremely good," said the American. "It's a pretty exciting time and I feel very fortunate to be one of only about 80 people trying not to let that happen." | See also: 02 Apr 01 | US Masters 02 Apr 01 | US Masters 02 Apr 01 | US Masters 26 Mar 01 | Golf Top US Masters stories now: Links to more US Masters stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
