Royal Rebel wins Gold Cup
Persian Punch and Royal Rebel
Royal Rebel (second left) moves ahead
Royal Rebel just prevailed in a tight finish with Persian Punch to land the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot.

Johnny Murtagh's rollercoaster meeting continued with his second winner of the day, with his mount overcoming a poor start to out-stay Persian Punch, who had dictated the race from the off.

The Mark Johnston-trained Royal Rebel went off at 8-1 in the colours of Peter Savill and just edged Persian Punch to win by a head.

Persian Punch, ridden by Richard Quinn, went for home around five furlongs out but was just unable to prevail.

Mixed emotions: Wins and bans for Murtagh

Owner Savill said: "This is a very special race - one of the most special races in the racing calendar. I honestly thought Persian Punch was going to come back and do us."

Murtagh, who has picked up two bans amounting to six days and won three races at the meeting, said: "It was hard at work for the final mile but Frankie (Dettori on Marienbard) pushed us along and once we had something to aim at I was pretty confident.

"Once we got to the front he has idled a bit but his heart is in the right place."
