In his column in The Guardian, the Leicester back described Australian debutant second row Justin Harrison as a "plod" and a "plank" before last Saturday's 29-23 defeat which saw the Lions lose the three-Test series 2-1.
And he subsequently pre-empted disciplinary action when he wrote: "I feel a fine coming on". A statement read: "The Lions management has expressed considerable concern at the newspaper comments allegedly made by Austin Healey in advance of the Lions' third Test Match against Australia in Sydney last Saturday." The committee will consist of Lions coach Graham Henry, tour manager Donal Lenihan and captain Martin Johnson. A confirmed date for the hearing will be set once Healey returns from holiday. Healey's comments provoked furious reaction from the Australian press, who nicknamed him "Lippy the Lion". The winger was made to eat humble pie when Harrison took the man-of-the-match award after an outstanding performance alongside John Eales for the Wallabies. And Healey acknowledged the ACT Brumbies player's memorable display when he said in his column: "The Aussies did their own homework - and my mate Justin Harrison had a bit of a game."
But both Healey and Dawson were roundly criticised by Clive Woodward. The England coach said both men would have been sent home from the tour had he been in charge. "If Matt or Austin had done this in the England set-up, they could only expect one result," he said. "What happens away from the public eye must always remain away from the public eye." | |
