Provided the stability at full-back that had seen him get the nod over Iain Balshaw - but lacked the flair of the three-quarters and made way for his Bath colleague at half-time.

14 - Dafydd James
Provided a defensive bulwark on the right wing as well as a formidable presence in attack. He finished a fantastic move for the second try and his barn-storming runs were the perfect complement to Robinson's fleet-footed jinks.

13 - Rob Henderson
His selection may have raised some eyebrows - but the Irishman answered his critics in superb style. His centre partnership with compatriot O'Driscoll was one of the main reasons behind the free-running victory.

12 - Brian O'Driscoll
Billed as the player with the potential to destroy the much-vaunted Aussie defence, he did exactly that. He made James' try with a quicksilver burst - and even better was to come with his sensational solo score. A stunning performance in the centre.

11 - Jason Robinson
Where now are those pundits who claimed this league convert was not ready for top-class union? One of the most exciting players on show, Robinson crossed the gain line at will and was tigerish in defence. And let us not forget, it was his blistering fifth-minute try - as he mugged Chris Latham - that set the bandwagon rolling.

10 - Jonny Wilkinson
England's metronomic kicker had a rare off-day with the boot. In the end it mattered little, though, as he created openings for his backs and was as steady as ever with the ball in hand.

9 - Rob Howley
In so many of the much-hyped one-on-one battles, the Lions ruined some huge reputations. And this was no exception. George Gregan may be rated as the world's best scrum-half - but he had to play second fiddle to Howley, who was the consummate link between forwards and backs.

8 - Scott Quinnell
Immense in the loose, often working on the fringes of the law. Dominated the back row exchanges and romped over for a devastating try. Replaced for the last quarter - probably to prevent a sin-binning.

7 - Richard Hill
As dependable as ever, the quiet man of the pack put his illustrious opposite number, George Smith, in the shade - despite playing out of position as open-side flanker.

6 - Martin Corry
Parachuted in from England's tour of north America, he showed the tireless form, scrapping around the fringes, that had brought him a late call-up. But blotted his copybook with a second-half yellow card for handling in a ruck.

5 - Danny Grewcock
One of the mainstays of the tour, the English second rower was an able lieutenant to captain Johnson. Bossed the line-out and put in some huge hits.

4 - Martin Johnson
The captain led by example in the style he has made all his own. Kept a tight rein on his side's discipline and comfortably won his personal battle with Aussie skipper John Eales.

3 - Phil Vickery
Hard as nails in the front row and scrummaged like a demon. But like Corry, he loses points for a late sin-binning for killing the ball - and for conceding too many penalties.

2 - Keith Wood
Inspirational display from the veteran of the 1997 tour. Solid line-out throwing, but he really came into his own as an immense impact runner and, surprisingly, as a stand-in fly-half - even trying an impudent drop-goal. Left the field with a blood injury - but a player with this sized heart was never likely to come off for good.

1 - Tom Smith
The lone Scot in the team, he brought all his experience of the triumph in South Africa in 1997 to bear with a hard-working effort in the heart of the pack. Tackled hard and was never far from the breakdown.

Iain Balshaw
(Replaced Perry, 40 minutes) Failed to ignite the game when he arrived as a substitute and was overshadowed by his fellow backs. Suspect in defence and missed tackles for both of Australia's tries.

Colin Charvis
(Replaced Quinnell, 62) One of the unluckiest players on tour, the back-rower got his deserved chance for some Test action - and did not disappoint. Nearly hacked through for a try late on.

Jason Leonard
(Replaced Tom Smith, 72) Little chance for the England front-row veteran to impress.
