| Tendulkar reaches 10,000 runs Sachin Tendulkar celebrates reaching his century Third one-day international, Indore: India 299-9, Australia 181 India beat Australia by 118 runs Click here for scorecard India's Sachin Tendulkar made history on Saturday by becoming the first batsman to reach 10,000 runs in one-day internationals. The 27-year-old veteran of 266 matches achieved the feat when he reached 34 during the 118 run victory against Australia at the Nehru Stadium.
Tendulkar is regarded by many as the best batsman in the world - he has also scored 6,720 runs in 82 Tests, since making his debut as a 16-year-old in Pakistan 12 years ago. He reached the milestone with a single off Shane Warne in the 19th over, and a packed stadium hailed him with a standing ovation and fireworks. He went on to make his 28th one-day century - athereby extending a record he already holds - as India compiled a daunting 299 for nine.
Tendulkar made 139 from only 125 balls with 19 fours. It overshadowed a career-best 83 in 88 balls by Vangipurappu Laxman. Those two dominated the innings, assembling a partnership of 199 for the second wicket in 29.4 overs. But Saurav Ganguly's poor run of form continued. The Indian captain replaced Laxman and failed to score before being caught by Michael Bevan off Damien Fleming. Fleming was the pick of the tourists' attack. He also dismissed Rahul Dravid as his ten overs cost 34. Glenn McGrath finished with three wickets for 52, but Shane Warne's ten overs went for 64 and the ten overs cobbled together by Damien Martyn, Andrew Symonds and Michael Bevan were hit for 94.
Australia's reply began well. Adam Gilchrist hared to a half century and at 102 for one, the tourists appeared well set. But once Gilchrist (63 from 70 balls) fell to Harbhajan Singh in the 19th over, Australia's innings subsided. Ricky Ponting followed in the next over - one of three wickets for the medium pace of Ajit Agarkar - as they slid to 136 for seven and out of contention. Harbhajan also claimed three wickets as India took a 2-1 lead in the five match series. |
