New Zealand win the Women's Cricket World Cup
New Zealand win the Women's Cricket World Cup
Catherine Campbell speaks exclusively to BBC Sport Online's Anna Thompson

New Zealand vice-captain Catherine Campbell could hardly contain her delight after the host nation beat favourites Australia to lift the Women's Cricket World Cup.

Campbell, in her fourth World Cup, said it was a dream come true to finally win women's cricket's most coveted prize.

New Zealand beat Australia by four runs in one of the most exciting finishes for years - sending 5,000 fans into a frenzy.

Afterwards Campbell said: "It was so exciting. The crowd went wild when we took the final wicket.

"I just grabbed a wicket and ran. It was bedlam. I couldn't find my team-mates because they were swamped by the fans."

New Zealand won the toss and started off well but were pegged back by Australia and were all out for 184.

Campbell said: "We felt we should have got another 30 to 40 runs. But then, when we started bowling we got two quick wickets and the game turned.

"I think we got wickets at the right times and kept our cool.

"It was nail-biting stuff for the fans. Right until the last moment, no-one could predict what was going to happen. But the fighting Kiwi spirit took us through."

Campbell believes the result will be a great fillip for cricket in New Zealand - and the women's game as a whole.

She said: "Australia are still a brilliant team but I think the result was good for women's cricket.

"We have had lots of support from the fans and the media and we hope the result will encourage more girls to start playing cricket."
