Test spirit can boost England
Graham Thorpe reverse sweeps during his innings in Dambulla
Thorpe: Top scored with an unbeaten 62
Graham Thorpe believes England can recover from losing the first one day international against Sri Lanka if they show the same spirit as they did in the Test series.

Thorpe, leading England for the first time in an international, top scored in the match, but he could not prevent a collapse to 143 all out and a Sri Lankan victory by five wickets.

It meant England had started the three match series with a defeat - just as they did in the Test series when they fought back to win 2-1.

"We're one-nil down but there's no point in being worried about it," said Thorpe.

"We'll just have to fight back and show a bit of spirit like we did in the Test series.

Muttiah Muralitharan too four wickets
Man of the match : Muttiah Muralitharan

"It's unfortunate that we haven't played as well today. We just didn't post a big enough score with which to test Sri Lanka.

"We tried hard, they (the opening bowlers) put a great effort in and charged in, but if you only make 140-odd in a one-day game it's not really enough."

Sri Lanka captain Sanath Jayasuriya, who scored an entertaining 39, was left content by his side's performance.

"We played really well. I think the bowlers did well and I'm very happy because we badly needed a win," he said.

"I thought (Nuwan) Zoysa and (Chaminda) Vaas bowled really well from the start and Murali and (Indika) de Saram bowled well."

After the match it was revealed that Muralitharan had been fined 65 per cent of his match fee and handed a three-match suspended ban by match referee Hanumant Singh for showing dissent.
