Justin Leonard looks close to his 10th career win after widening his lead to eight shots in the third round of the St Jude Classic in Memphis. He is on 17 under at 193, the biggest 54-hole lead on the PGA Tour this year, after shooting a 66 on Saturday.
Fellow American Heath Slocum is second after a 67 and is one stroke clear of compatriot Tom Pernice, who shot a 68.
Defending champion David Toms was one of the few players to make up ground on Leonard with 65 to move to six under.
Fred Funk (66) is a shot ahead, tied on 203 with Davis Love (68) and Paul Goydos (70).
Leonard's second bogey-free round of the tournament was his worst as he birdied none of the par-fours but still added three shots to his overnight lead.
 | I still want to finish this off well and play a good solid round |
The former Open champion has played virtually flawless golf in Memphis with 18 birdies and just one bogey. Leonard, who won the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic in January, is trying to become the fifth multiple winner on Tour this year, joining Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Vijay Singh and Kenny Perry.
"I just had another good solid day and didn't make any mistakes and hit the ball really well and made a few putts along the way," he said.
"I'm looking forward to playing with an eight shot lead as opposed to one or two but I still want to finish this off well and play a good solid round.
"I don't want anything that happens tomorrow to take away from what I've done here this week.
"To get around here with one bogey is something I'm pretty proud of."
