Defending champion David Toms eased to a six-shot victory in the St Jude Classic on Sunday in Tennessee. Toms, who held a seven-stroke lead at the end of the third round, shot a two-over-par round of 76 in blustery conditions to end up at 16-under.
Bob Estes' 69 was enough for second place at 10-under, while Steve Lowery and Tim Herron tied for third,
"I just had to grind it out - I knew as long as I could hang in there and make a lot of pars, I'd be OK," said Toms.
In difficult conditions, Toms had five bogeys and three birdies but never looked in danger of surrendering his lead.
"I knew it would be tough for anybody to shoot a low score it was a tough day for everybody," said Toms.
"In the end, it was good enough."
The victory represented a major return to form for Toms who missed the first two tournaments of the 2004 PGA Tour season after undergoing wrist surgery.
Toms had missed the cut six times from his first 10 starts of the year.
The victory was Toms' 10th on the PGA Tour and earned him $846,000 (461,000).
With a forecast of thunderstorms and 50mph winds, the players started early and were grouped in threesomes instead of in pairs.
