Defending champion David Toms fired a stunning 63 to overhaul Vaughn Taylor at halfway in the St Jude Classic.

Toms reached 12 under to lead by one after overnight leader Taylor added a 65 to his opening 66.

Ben Crane (65) was third on seven under with a quartet of players one stroke further back, led by former Open and USPGA champion John Daly (65).

"The more I've played this tournament, the better I've played. The last few years it's been good to me," Toms said.

The world number 16, second overnight, bagged an eagle at the long third alongside six birdies in his 63. Taylor's round was also blemish free with six birdies.

"I like seeing my name up there," said Taylor, who earned his card by finishing 11th on the Nationwide Tour in 2003.

"I'm trying to get used to it, so when I do see it up there it's not a shock to me."

Daly, who needs a strong finish to earn an exemption to the US Open, bogeyed his final hole when he tried to putt between two sprinkler heads on the ninth.

"It would be great to have a chance. I've got to shoot seven or eight-under-par on Saturday. I don't know if I'll catch Toms or not, but it'll be close anyway. The scores will be low over the weekend," said Daly.

"David gets it going like he's going, he's tough to beat."
