Leader David Toms opened a seven-shot gap after round three of the St Jude Classic in Tennessee.

The defending champion, who led Vaughn Taylor by one overnight, fired a six-under 65 to reach 18 under par.

Toms has missed five of his last seven cuts while recovering from a wrist operation in December.

Taylor is 11 under with Brian Gay on 10 under and Japan's Hirofumi Miyase one shot back. Severe thunderstorms are expected during the final round.

Former USPGA champion Toms started the year ranked ninth in the world and slipped to 16th. He had finished tied for 34th at New Orleans and tied for 44th at Colonial last week.

"When you're not playing very good golf, it's not much fun," Toms said. "I'm having fun this week."

Former Open champion and US Open winner John Daly slipped from a tie for fourth to a tie for 19th on five under with a 72, while Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson was on six under after a 64.
