Justin Leonard widened his lead to five strokes over Swede Fredrik Jacobson as the St Jude Classic in Memphis reached its midway stage. The American, who held a two-stroke overnight lead, fired a second round 65 to move 13 under par on Friday.
Compatriot Paul Goydos is a shot behind Jacobson after leaping into contention with a 66.
Seven shots off the pace are Americans Matt Gogel, Heath Slocum, Tom Pernice Jr and Roland Thatcher.
Kirk Triplett, Davis Love and Sweden's Richard S Johnson are one shot further back at five-under 135.
Defending champion David Toms, attempting to become the first to win the St Jude three years in a row, suffered a setback as he hit a one-over 71 to sit 12 shots off the pace.
Kenny Perry, who stormed to a seven-shot victory at the Colonial, who romped to a seven-stroke victory at the Colonial last week to move to number nine in the world, missed the cut after slumping to a two-day seven-over 147.
It is the second time this season that Perry has won a title then failed to make the weekend in his next event.
Former Open champion Leonard, who has just one bogey on his scorecard through two rounds, was delighted to maintain his charge.
"I felt like it was difficult to come back after shooting a low round and the next day your expectations are so high that sometimes a round can get away from you," said Leonard.
"I think today I really did a very good job of not worrying so much about the score but hitting the shots I needed to hit. That is the thing I have to continue to do this weekend. "I don't think I have ever had a lead like this. So, I don't have a lot of experience to draw upon.
