Former Open champion Justin Leonard shot a flawless eight-under-par 62 to grab the first-round lead at the St Jude Classic in Memphis. The 32-year-old carded eight birdies to take a two-shot lead ahead of fellow American Kirk Triplett, while Davis Love and Jason Bohn were tied on 65.
Matt Gogel and Tom Pernice Jr finished a shot further back on four under.
A group of 11 players, including last year's runner-up, Bob Estes, were all in the clubhouse at three under.
Defending champion David Toms, attempting to become the first to win the St Jude three years in a row, was one shot further adrift on two under.
Kenny Perry, who stormed to a seven-shot victory at the Colonial, made a slow start as he slipped to three over.
Leonard was delighted with his performance but believed "benign" playing conditions with clear skies and no wind in the morning were a factor.
"If we get a day this week or in the future where you get your normal prevailing winds here, you will see how much tougher it is," he said.
