Sorenstam is the first woman to play in the Skins Game |
Annika Sorenstam came second in the Skins Game behind Fred Couples, but finished ahead of Phil Mickelson and last year's winner Mark O'Meara. Sorenstam had been leading after the first day's play and was in contention for overall victory at the last.
But Couples took the final 'Super Skin', worth $200,000, and finished with total winnings of $605,000.
Sorenstam was second with $225,000, ahead of Mickelson on $170,000 and O'Meara who left with nothing.
In the Skins Game each hole is worth a sum of money, but, if there is no outright winner, the pot moves on.
It was Couples' fourth victory in the event and he clinched it when the 'Super Skin' went to a play-off and Sorenstam failed to match his and Mickelson's birdie at the second extra hole.
Couples claimed the final skin on the fourth extra hole, the 17th, with a 20-foot birdie that Mickelson could not match.
Couples had already won a $140,000 skin by sinking a 55-footer for birdie on the 17th in normal play.
Sorenstam began the day on $175,000 and added another $50,000 skin on the 10th with a 15-foot birdie.
"I'd love to do it again," Sorenstam said. "I'm just sad that it's over.
"I wanted to play some more. I've had a wonderful two days."
Six months ago at the Colonial, Sorenstam narrowly missed the cut when she became the first woman to play on the men's US Tour for 58 years.
