Sorenstam is the first woman to play in the Skins Game |
Annika Sorenstam outshone her male competitors to be the big winner on the first day of the Skins Game. The Swede fired in a 40-yard bunker shot to win $175,000 on the ninth hole at the Trilogy Golf Club in California.
Phil Mickelson picked up $100,000, Fred Couples won $25,000, but defending champion Mark O'Meara missed out.
Six months ago at the Colonial, Sorenstam narrowly missed the cut when she became the first woman to play on the men's US Tour for 58 years.
Sorenstam's big money chip came about because no-one won the sixth, seventh or eighth holes outright.
In the Skins Game each hole is worth a sum of money, but, if there is no outright winner, the pot moves on.
None of the players made the green in two on the par five ninth, and Sorenstam was in the worst shape of all on the far side of the green.
But her shot out of the sand skipped on to the green and rolled in for an eagle.
After congratulating Sorenstam, Couples, O'Meara and Mickelson took their shots from the rough, and none came close.
