Kenny Perry shot a second round 69 to take the lead at seven under par in the Nedbank Challenge in Sun City.
But Spain's Sergio Garcia and Perry's compatriot Jerry Kelly are one shot back at the half-way stage.
After the round, Perry put his low scoring down to consistency.
"I guess the key for me has been able to drop the ball on the fairway time and again which is a big advantage here because the rough is terrible," he said.
"It'll cost you plenty if you go in there.
"I feel I'm just getting better and more consistent as I get older."
Perry finished his round in style, with a 20-footer on the 18th to give him the outright lead on a weather-affected day.
But the mid-afternoon thunderstorm did not affect Garcia, whose round of 66 was the lowest of the day.
Darren Clarke is four shots off the pace after a second round 71 while Padraig Harrington fired a 70 to lie nine behind leader Perry.
Tournament favourite Ernie Els is the only man over par after a 75 left him three over.
