| Saturday, 5 October, 2002, 20:40 GMT 21:40 UK Gustafson masters McKay ![]() Gustafson sealed victory with a 12-foot birdie putt Sophie Gustafson beat Scotland's Mhairi McKay at the first hole of a sudden-death play-off to win the Biarritz Classic. McKay had shot 66 in the final round to move within touching distance of a first victory of her five-year career. But Gustafson joined her Solheim Cup team-mate on 10 under with a brilliant 64.
The Swede holed from 12 feet for a birdie at the first extra hole and then watched as McKay missed her chance from four feet. It was a big disappointment for 27-year-old McKay, who has thrice been a runner-up on the LPGA tour in America. "I had such a great final round so to let it slip away does hurt," she said. Gustafson made her intentions clear with a front nine of six-under-par 29, while McKay turned up the pressure with four birdies in six holes in a sparkling run from the turn.
It was Gustafson's eighth Evian Tour title and her first victory since the Australian Open 19 months ago. Her fellow Swede Helen Alfredsson had begun the day with a two-shot lead but dropped three shots in the first four holes. She eventually shot 71 for a share of fourth place on nine under with Finland's Rikka Hakkarainen, who closed with a 69. Hakkarainen stood on the 18th tee with a one-shot lead but took two in a greenside bunker for a double-bogey six and missed the play-off by a single shot. |
