Gotland has stepped up its bid to stage the 2015 Island Games by promoting how close together the sporting facilities on the island are. Gotland is Jersey's only rival to host the event, with the final decision due at the Island Games AGM on 27 June. Staff from Gotland's Sports Federation cycled around the chosen venues last week to demonstrate their proximity. Bo Frykenstam from Gotland's Bid said: "It is very important athletes don't have to spend long getting to venues." He added: "Regardless of whether they will use buses or bikes we want the athletes to experience the special Island Games atmosphere, and be able to easily watch as much as possible of the competitions in an environmentally friendly way." In May, Jersey's Island Games bid committee chairman Phil Austin, called on neighbours Guernsey to lend their support to the bid. Jersey has not hosted the Games since 1997, with Gotland last playing host in 1999.
