Women's league defended by Sylvans' coach

Lisa Sylvester
Sylvester said there is plenty of competition in the women's league

The coach of Guernsey's newly crowned women's football champions Sylvans has defended the strength of the league.

The women's game has received criticism from some quarters after the withdrawal of two sides from the league.

Lisa Sylvester, who took the helm this season after hanging up her boots, said 12 titles in 14 years for her side does not mean there is no competition.

She said: "Yes we are dominating but we still get very good opposition. But generally there aren't enough players."

Northerners and Belgrave Wanderers pulled out of the league at the start of the season and Sylvester said she thought this was because of a lack of women players.

She said: "For people to say women's football is in a poor state, I think, they've got to look at the bigger picture."
