Chelsea see off Everton to go top

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Chelsea smashed Everton's 100% record with a 5-3 win that took the Blues to the top of the Women's Premier League.

That left Arsenal, who beat previous leaders Sunderland 5-1 but have only played six games, as the league's only team to hold a perfect record.

The Gunners have now moved up to third in the table, while Millwall Lionesses went in to fourth with a 2-0 victory at Bristol Academy.

Leeds Carnegie's visit to Watford was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Everton 3-5 Chelsea

Everton were handicapped from the kick-off as midfielder Emily Westwood had to take over in goal from the injured Rachel Brown.

Chelsea took full advantage, going two goals up through Dunia Susi and Lianne Sanderson in the first 17 minutes.

The Toffees wasted one golden opportunity as Natasha Dowie missed a penalty, but from a second spot-kick Fara Williams reduced the arrears in the 27th minute.

Goals by Eartha Pond and Shelby Hills in the last 10 minutes of the first half put the visitors within sight of a famous victory.

And though Williams pulled another goal back, Susi's second strike 16 minutes from time made Dowie's 88th-minute goal academic.

Arsenal 5-1 Sunderland

Julie Fleeting was on target twice to make if four goals in two games on her return to action following the birth of her first child.

A 23rd-minute Fleeting goal cancelled out Natalie Gutteridge's seventh-minute opener for the Black Cats.

The Scotland striker hit the net again five minutes later, then three goals in the first 14 minutes of the second half put the game beyond the visitors.

Fleeting's international colleague Kim Little grabbed two of them, taking her season's goal tally to 22, and England winger Rachel Yankey completed the scoring.

Victory maintained Arsenal's 100% record and ended a four-match unbeaten run for the Black Cats.

Bristol Academy 0-2 Millwall Lionesses

Bristol beat Birmingham City 1-0 on Thursday to take themselves off the bottom of the table, but a ninth defeat in 11 matches left them stranded in the relegation zone.

Millwall had taken only one point from their previous six games, but goals by Ann-Marie Heatherson and captain Dionne Lennon got them back to winning ways.
