Chelsea go top after thumping win

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Chelsea are the new leaders of the Women's Premier League after a 4-0 victory over Millwall Lionesses.

Blues are top on goal difference from the previous joint leaders Leeds Carnegie and Sunderland, who battled out a goalless draw.

Everton climbed two places to seventh with a 3-1 win against struggling Blackburn Rovers.

The Toffees moved ahead of Doncaster Belles and Nottingham Forest, whose game ended in a 1-1 draw.

Millwall Lionesses 0-4 Chelsea

Three goals in the final 25 minutes swept the Blues to victory after they had led 1-0 at the interval through Lianne Sanderson.

Emma Whitter's 65th-minute strike doubled the visitors' advantage and further goals by Dunia Susi and Whitter wrapped up a comfortable win.

Sunderland 0-0 Leeds Carnegie

Both sides went all out for victory in a highly entertaining game whose outstanding players were the goalkeepers.

Leeds' former Sunderland keeper Carly Telford denied Jordan Nobbs and Kelly McDougall with excellent saves.

At the other end Rachel Laws kept out goalbound efforts by Sue Smith, Ellen White and Carla Cantrell.

The Black Cats went closest to breaking the deadlock when Natalie Gutteridge hit the post five minutes into the second half.

Everton 3-1 Blackburn Rovers

Katie Anderton gave Blackburn a third minute lead but within four minutes the Toffees were back on level terms through Fara Williams.

Jody Handley's 29th minute strike put the home side in front and two minutes later Toni Duggan brilliantly drove in the decisive third goal.

Victory by a wider margin would have been Everton's but for some poor second half finishing and a string of fine saves by goalkeeper Crystal Parker.

Doncaster Rovers Belles 1-1 Nottingham Forest

Forest's Paxton Johnson hit a stoppage-time equaliser to force the draw after the Belles had controlled most of the game.

The home side almost went in front when a good 18-yard effort by Precious Hamilton hit the bar.

Rachel Williams also went close on a couple of occasions before Liz Hansen gave them a 34th-minute lead with a well-struck 20-yard drive.

Forest hit back after the break but defeat was on the cards until a mistake by goalkeeper Nicola Hobbs allowed Johnson to rifle in the equaliser.
