Sunderland go joint top after win

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

Sunderland went joint top of the Women's Premier League with a 2-1 victory at Millwall Lionesses.

The Black Cats, who have never been so high in the table, are behind leaders Leeds Carnegie only on goal difference.

Watford would have regained the lead with a win against Doncaster Belles but were held to a goalless draw.

The Hornets nevertheless moved up to third place, ahead of Chelsea in fourth spot and Millwall in fifth.

All of the weekend's other scheduled games were postponed because of international calls.

Millwall Lionesses 1-2 Sunderland

Kelly McDougall took advantage of a defensive mistake to put the Black Cats ahead three minutes before half-time.

Thirteen minutes after the break Steph Bannon doubled the lead with a far-post header.

Millwall rallied in the closing stages and pulled a goal back when Ann Marie-Heatherson cut in from the right to drive home an 18-yard shot.

But the Lionesses, who were the early-season pacesetters, were unable to force an equaliser.

Watford 0-0 Doncaster Rovers Belles

Donny edged the first half of a dour game, but despite creating several chances they were unable to put themselves in front.

Watford enjoyed more possession in the second period and went close to a winner on three occasions in the last five minutes.

But the Belles held on to climb three places up to seventh.
