Striker Natasha Dowie scored twice as Everton won 3-0 at Nottingham Forest to draw level with Arsenal at the top of the Women's Premier League table.
If the Toffees now win at Doncaster Belles on Wednesday they will head into next Sunday's title decider against the Gunners with a three-point lead.
Third-placed Chelsea ended their season in style, beating Blackburn 4-0 for a sixth victory in seven league games.
Doncaster Belles will finish fourth after a 2-2 draw at Birmingham.
Nottingham Forest 0-3 Everton
Everton needed two late goals to beat a spirited Forest side that will finish the season third from bottom but gave the title chasers a run for their money.
The first half was evenly contested and the visitors had to wait until nine minutes after the interval to take the lead through Dowie.
But goals in the last eight minutes by Toni Duggan and Dowie, with her 18th of the season, won the game and kept Everton on track for the title.
Chelsea 4-0 Blackburn Rovers
Leading scorer Lianne Sanderson's 19th goal of the season, struck in the 22nd minute, put Chelsea on the road to three points.
It then took until 20 minutes into the second half for the home side to double their lead through Emma Whitter.
But a comfortable victory was wrapped up by Georgie Giddings' 71st-minute strike and a stoppage time goal by Dunia Susi.
Birmingham City 2-2 Doncaster Rovers Belles
After beating Blues 3-1 last week Donny needed only a draw to clinch fourth place, but a convincing win looked on the cards when they quickly went two goals in front.
Captain Vicky Exley hit the opener after just four minutes and midfield partner Rachel Williams added the second goal eight minutes later.
The home side fought back strongly, however, and after Heather Scheuber had reduced the arrears in the 53rd minute Naomi Morris hit a 64th-minute equaliser.
From that point Blues took control, but despite producing lots of pressure they were unable to force a winner that would have lifted them above their opponents.
