Martin Foyle resigns as York City manager

York boss Martin Foyle has resigned from his post at Bootham Crescent.

The former Port Vale manager, who took charge of the Minstermen in October 2008, led York to the Blue Square Premier play-off final last season.

But, after the summer sale of last term's top scorer Richard Brodie, City have endured a mixed start this season.

They currently lie 15th in the top tier of non-league football with just three wins from 10 games - and were beaten 5-0 at Mansfield on Tuesday night.

York chairman Jason McGill has put assistant manager Andy Porter and youth team coach Steve Torpey in charge for Saturday's game at Tamworth.

"Andy Porter and I have lived up here in York six nights a week," said Foyle. "We have worked tirelessly to change the fortunes of the club to get it back to its position of challenging at the top of the league. We have certainly achieved this.

"With the money from the cup runs, Wembley visits and the sale of Richard Brodie I know I leave the club in a much healthier position than when I arrived 20 months ago. Hopefully the club will move on and regain league status in the near future.

Foyle, 47, left Port Vale in September 2007 and had a spell as assistant manager at Wrexham before succeeding Colin Walker as York boss.

In his first season at Bootham Crescent, Foyle led City to the FA Trophy final at Wembley, where they were beaten 2-0 by Stevenage.

After York finished fifth in the Blue Square Premier last season, they defeated Luton in the semi-finals of the play-offs, the second leg of which was marred by crowd trouble as City players were forced to cower in the back of a stand at Kenilworth Road to avoid Hatters fans.

However, the Minstermen tasted defeat at Wembley for the second time in two seasons with a 3-1 reverse against Oxford in the play-off final.

Since then, striker Brodie, who scored 26 league goals last season, has been sold to Crawley Town, and York have got off to a stuttering start to this season.

They did not taste victory until five games in, have picked up just two points away from home and were hammered 5-0 at Mansfield on Tuesday night, Foyle's final game in charge.

"We have also reached the promotion play-off final and been to Wembley twice and these have been very proud moments in my career.

"We also reached the third round of the FA Cup and played against Premier League opposition.

"The club record of 10 consecutive wins was also a fantastic achievement for all my players.

"I would like to thank Jason and his family for giving me the opportunity to manage York City.

"They have been fantastic with me from day one and have been very supportive. We have had an excellent working relationship."

York have confirmed that they will release a statement next week.

Caretaker boss Porter is expected to be a contender for the job, while former City favourite Andy McMillan, 42, who is assistant head of youth at Lincoln and still lives in York, could be a popular option.
