York City manager Colin Walker said he was proud of his players after they fought back from 2-0 down to draw 3-3 at Stevenage.
Goals from Onome Sodje, Peter Holmes and Craig Farrell even gave City a 3-2 lead until Steve Morison made it 3-3.
Walker told BBC Radio York: "We thought the best way to combat them was to get at them, unfortunately we didn't plan on going two down.
"But we had faith in the players, and I'm really proud of them."
The result left York five points from both the play-offs and the relegation zone in the Blue Square Premier.
Walker was impressed with the performances of strikers Sodje and Farrell as they responded to not starting as many games as they might have expected this season with goals.
"I thought Farrell and Sodje were an absolute threat throughout the game and we had creativity in midfield and people with energy," said Walker.
Walker refused to criticize the players for the three goals they let in, preferring to examine the video before deciding who was at fault.
"We'll watch the game again and then we'll show the players and then we'll make them better at it," he added.
"I don't think our defence will come up against better players than Steve Morison and Mitchell Cole."
Sodje is a doubt for Saturday's home game against Cambridge after pulling up with a hamstring strain when through on goal near the end.
Right-back Ben Purkiss also came off with an injury, but Simon Russell's substitution was tactical.
