Phillips' contract cheer
Wrexham's Waynne Phillips
Waynne Phillips has been unlucky with injuries
Wrexham have shown their support for broken leg victim Waynne Phillips by offering him a permanent contract.

The 31-year-old midfielder was on a month-to-month deal at the Racecourse Ground but suffered his injury in the season opener at Scunthorpe on Saturday.

However, the club has decided to stand by the veteran and given him a contract until the end of the season.

"It is the only decent thing the club can do and it is the right thing to do," Wrexham chairman Mark Guterman said.

"Waynne would give everything for the club and we appreciate what he has done.

"It was a spontaneous decision but at the end of the day we want Waynne fit again and back out on the field for us."

Guterman agreed that the club could have taken the easy financial decision to offload Phillips and strengthen the squad but was adamant that "that's not the way we do things at Wrexham".

Following his injury at Glanford Park, Phillips underwent an operation on Monday afternoon to pin and plate his broken fibula and tibia.

"It wasn't a bad challenge but it was a very bad break," Wrexham manager Denis Smith told BBC Radio Wales as he prepared for Tuesday night's match against his former club Oxford.

"It did sicken the lads - it wasn't a pretty sight. The lads have all been to see him and we all send him their best wishes but we have to get on with our jobs."
