Wolves keeper in knee op setback

Matt Murray
Murray made one Premier League appearance for Wolves in 2003

Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray is likely to miss the start of the Premier League season after undergoing another operation on his troublesome knee.

Murray, 28, ruptured his patella tendon whilst on loan at Hereford in November, as he stepped up his comeback from a number of serious injuries.

He has had further surgery after reportedly suffering pain in the knee during his rehabilitation.

The 28-year-old has not played a first team game for Wolves since May 2007.

The former England under-21 international has only made 106 appearances, despite making his debut for Wolves in August 2002.

He had an outstanding breakthrough season and was one of the stars of the team's run to the play-offs, which ended with Wolves being promoted to the Premier League in 2003.

Murray was tipped for full England honours soon afterwards, but he started just one match, a 5-1 defeat at Blackburn on the opening day of the season, and did not return to the first team until January 2005.

Wolves are well catered for in terms of goalkeeping cover, with Wales number one Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme both playing a significant part in the club's Championship-winning campaign.
