Luctonians retain North Mids Cup

Lucs
Luctonians retained the North Midlands Cup with a 35-19 win over Dudley Kingswinford at Stourton Park.

It was the fourth time in five seasons that the Herefordshire side have lifted the county cup.

Luctonians' tries all came from backs, centres Brett Prior and Cameron Hewitt, wingers Andy Garrod and Pete Smith and full-back Mark Panniers all crossing.

DK replied with two tries of their own from winger Robbie Jones and another from full-back Simon Fletcher.

Fly-half Gareth Bown, a North Midlands county player, landed two conversions.

DK, perhaps unnerved at playing on the home ground of their great local rivals Stourbridge, eventually found their feet and rallied strongly in the second half.

Full credit to DK for the way they came back and won the second half. It made for a terrific final

But the platform for the win was laid inside the first quarter when Luctonians romped into a 20-point lead.

And it proved a perfect way for former Gloucester flanker Viv Wooley, who is to retain an involvement at Mortimer Park, to sign off as head coach.

"It was a good way to end the season and for Viv to end his current role with us," said Simon Green-Price, Luctonians' club administrator.

"We knew that DK were the underdogs and you always have to be wary of the underdogs which is why we hit them hard early on.

"But full credit to DK for the way that they came back and won the second half. It made for a terrific final."
